24th March 1814: Scribbling Mill destroyed near Huddersfield, arson suspected

On Thursday 24th March 1814, a Scribbling Mill belonging to Messrs Bates & Hobson at Sewdhill, near Kirkburton, Huddersfield was burned to the ground. The Leeds Mercury reported that an arsonist was suspected, and a reward of 100 guineas was offered.

28th September 1812: Two 'Luddite' burglars committed to York Castle

On Monday 28th September 1812, two men - John Smith & David Moorhouse, both of Kirkburton  were committed to York Castle by Joseph Radcliffe on charges of "burglary under the colour of Luddism" for the robbery of William Savage at Kirkburton on 11th June 1812.

13th June 1812: Burglary at Kirkburton, near Huddersfield

In the early hours of Saturday 13th June 1812, a robbery took place at the home of a Mr Savage of Kirkburton, near Huddersfield.

Savage awoke to find 2 men in his bedroom, who pointed a gun at him and his son, who he shared the room with. The men demanded his money and keys: Savage gave them 23 shillings and although the men searched his drawers, they could find nothing else they wanted to take.
