9th May 1812: Colonel Ralph Fletcher commits more prisoners to Lancaster Castle

Dear Sir/

Before the Post leave, I have just time to acquaint you that on the Night of Thursday last (7 instant) having previously received Information, from a person confined by the Special Constable under the Watch & Ward Act―there caused seventeen persons to be taken into Custody of which – after Examinations which have lasted yesterday & this day—I have committed to Lancaster the Six following persons – Thomas Holding—James Holding—William Holding Arthur Holding—Peter Smith and Thomas Shelton on the proofs exhibited by Edward Crompton Isaac Crompton & John Grime whose Informations (or Copies thereof) – I inclose.

Two have been discharged — several admitted to Bail & the remainder remanded for further Examination—The reluctancy at declaring what has passed - by any of the persons implicated is difficult to overcome - but one or two have declared – and I trust those committed may be brought to Justice—you will excuse any further Explanation—the mail is ready to set off
