17th June 1812: Food riot at Horbury, West Yorkshire

On Wednesday 17th June 1812, Benjamin Byrom, a hawker of potatoes & onions had set up his cart at Horbury on market day. At some point during the day, a crowd gathered and set about upsetting the cart, tipping the contents into the street. Some of the crowd took produce away, and at least one woman was subsequently arrested.

As reported in the Leeds Mercury of 27th June 1812.
