At 10.00 p.m. on Monday 20th April 1812, and following a day of serious rioting in the town, a hay stack was set alight and largely destroyed on the Western side of Bolton.
The information about this attempt at arson is contained in a letter from John Pilkington, a brewer & Deputy Lieutenant at Bolton, to the Earl of Derby, which can be found at HO 42/122.
