In the evening of Tuesday 21st April 1812, the Rope Walk at Bolton was set alight and destroyed by fire. A field nearby had been used for secret nocturnal meetings of weavers for weeks prior to the arson. The building was described as being 48 yards long, and having a thatched roof.
The information about this arson attack is contained in a letter from John Pilkington, a brewer & Deputy Lieutenant at Bolton, to the Earl of Derby, which can be found at HO 42/122.
