18th April 1812: Spinning factory set alight in Bolton

In the evening of Saturday 18th April 1812, a spinning factory at Bolton belonging to Roger Holland & Co - the second largest cotton spinning business in the area - was set alight. The fire, however, was discovered and extinguished before it could take hold.

The information about this attempt at arson is contained in a letter from John Pilkington, a brewer & Deputy Lieutenant at Bolton, to the Earl of Derby, which can be found at HO 42/122.
