18th April 1812: Stockport solicitor John Lloyd arrests man with pro-Luddite slogans in Stockport

Stockport 18 Apl 1812

Sir

Robt Williams who distributes Pamphlets & numbers of Books for Cowdry & Slack Seditious Printers in Manchester was found a few days ago distributing Catalogues of Books in the this Town on some of which were written “No blind King — Ned Lud for ever” all the same hand writing delivered at several houses fresh written & these papers are preserved & can be identified — & when Williams was brought before the Justice I got him to write same words & I think he could be convicted upon the similitude of hand writing — the justices Mssrs Prescot Philips Broughton Tatton & Marsland before they accept Bail desire to be advised by you, for the case appears to partake more of a treasonable than a more seditious nature —

It is quite impossible for me to send you any examples but I hope upon the above brief statement you will be so obliging to reply by return for the satisfaction of the magistrates

I have the honor to be
Sir
Your very ob.t humble S.t

J Lloyd
